Child safeguarding for councils

Regulatory changes across Australia are on the way to ensure organisations with children in their care comply with nationally consistent child safe standards.

All councils in Australia will need to ensure their child safeguarding standards and processes are at the highest possible level and that they have the systems in place to meet changing legislation and best practice.

Consider having your team trained by Child Wise, pioneers in child safety, to ensure your council meets the National Principles/Standards for Child Safe Organisations. Our qualified and experienced experts will come to you and train your teams focusing on awareness, prevention and early intervention.

Our child safety training programs are beneficial for a range of council areas including early year’s staff, out of school hours care services, libraries, maternal health, sport and recreation, crossing supervisors, leadership and councillors.

Tailored training programs for councils

We have a range of child safety training programs that can be tailored to the size and complexity of your council as well as the needs of your team. Our training programs can be customised to help your staff ensure they meet their child safeguarding responsibilities based on their role and level of interaction with children. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Child facing roles i.e. staff and volunteers working directly with children and young people
  • Child safety champions (Child Safety Officers, HR staff and anyone else with a child safety porftolio)
  • Executives and councillors

We have a range of face-to-face and virtual classroom training programs that are suitable for council staff, leadership, board and volunteers that can be delivered in their standard format or tailored on request.

You can find a complete list of our face-to-face child safety training programs here.

All of our programs include practical hands-on activities and scenarios that can be tailored to your council to reinforce the learning experience.

I'm so pleased to have received this training as it's such an important topic, and in my work areas, something that isn't 'obvious' but so critically important. Thank you."

Child safeguarding resources and outcomes for councils

Depending on the program, we will provide attendees with valuable learning material to take away to deepen their knowledge and keep as a reference.

The material provided can help participants map out their action plans and what to do next when back in their day jobs, provide reference material that can be used on a day to day basis as well as help participants to share their experience with fellow colleagues.

Our training sessions will provide team members networking and sharing opportunities in a safe space.

Learning outcomes vary by type of training program as well as by what your council wants to achieve in that specific session, which will be discussed and agreed with our experts prior to the session.

Why Child Wise?

Child Wise can assist councils in ways to encourage a child safe culture and mindset with all staff and volunteers and the local community.

Child Wise has worked with councils extensively since the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and has developed expertise in understanding councils’ unique needs and how they relate to child safeguarding. Our advisors have experience in understanding the complexities councils face of not only embedding the National Principles or Standards into areas such as early years, maternal health, sport and recreation and youth work, but also into overarching risk policies, procurement, grants, waste management, events and more.

Child Wise has delivered many bespoke training sessions for councils, whether it be 30 sessions over 6 months training all council staff and volunteers or a one off training presentation for library staff, school crossing supervisors, lifeguards, councilors or local community groups.
